BRIEF UPDATE BY ESTUARY CARE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH KOSRA, BRRAG, & KENTON / BOESMANS CHAMBER OF BUSINESS AND TOURISM (the Sand Dune Action Group)
Estuary Care convened a meeting recently with representatives of MER, the Marine Environmental Engineers, their dune expert Andrew Mather and representatives of Ndlambe and BRRAG to confirm the terms of reference for the study.
The good news is that Ndlambe reported that through our technical input in relation to the changed river course and other representations about the dune issue, we persuaded Ndlambe that the KSDNA plan could no longer proceed and they in turn persuaded DEDEAT to permanently cancel the KSDNA plan. No further sand movement will now take place and Ndlambe will now await the results from the MER study before any further action will be taken.
It was agreed that MER would be given free rein to compile their report without outside influence, ours or any other. They did however welcome our background information and they have assured us that their modus operandi was to work with nature rather that oppose it. We have asked that their report will consider a phased approach due to our limited funding and to be mindful that we rely on voluntary funding from our members and public donations to fund our work and contribute to any implementation plan.
Readers are once more requested to continue their generous financial and moral support to ensure that the best solution is implemented for the benefit of the whole community as well as for nature.
Financial contributions to a dedicated dune fund, which will be greatly appreciated, are tax deductible and a tax certificate can be issued in terms of Article 18A.
