As mentioned in our June 2017 Newsletter local members of Estuary Care are working with The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in providing transport to DAFF Rangers up the two estuaries by boat to check on fishing and bait issues.
Dave Curran says:
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) operates out of Port Alfred under the leadership of Andile Maki. Their area of responsibility stretches from the Fish River to Sunday’s River and they are responsible for the management of all fish and bait related activities in the rivers, estuaries and sea in this area. Monitoring and patrol activities are currently conducted by vehicle or foot patrol and as a consequence these activities are restricted to areas accessible by vehicle or foot.
Estuary Care has identified an opportunity to partner with DAFF. Members are volunteering their boats and time to provide transportation for the DAFF Rangers on both the Kariega and Boesmans Estuaries. This serves to give the Rangers access to areas previously not patrolled. It also serves to make the presence of control activities on the two Estuaries much more visible. The emphasis of the patrols is on resource preservation and education about the need to look after our natural assets.
The program has been running for about 2 months with 8 volunteers currently active. The role of volunteers is a support one in the provision of transport for the Rangers.
We are always on the lookout for additional volunteers. If you have a boat and are interested in donating a few hours every two months or so please feel free to contact Dave Curran at davecurran53@gmail.com or 084 991 8023. It’s a great way to enjoy our natural resources and make a contribution to them being with us for a long time yet.
