The Dry Bones Valley (DBV) project. This is driven by Chester Wilmot and seeks to motivate Provincial and National authorities to clear the moving dune which has formed at the western end of Dry Bones Valley and is contributing to the flow of sand through DBV and the resultant denudation of sand from Middle Beach up to the Main Kariega beach. We believe that clearing the dune up DBV will also contribute to a lessening of the sand ingress up the Bushman’s River.
Chester and I met with the Provincial Coast care committee in East London in early December. Chester presented our Power Point presentation and the committee has been persuaded to undertake an “Onsite inspection” in late March 2015. The committee is comprised of National and Provincial personnel who have the power to make recommendations. We will use this opportunity to discuss the whole question of the steady siltation of the Bushman’s river and the threat of blockage of the mouth. Chester has been at great pains to keep the homeowners of DBV updated on progress and implications of this project. This has in turn led to a revival of interest in Denis Laubscher’s “Tidal Flooding”
The rehabilitation of the two major tow paths: On the West bank of the Kariega and on the East bank of the Bushman’s.
The ongoing maintenance of river signage and assisting with the clearing of river access paths.
The upkeep of our Web site page and the publication of quarterly news letters to our members.
The sale of boat licenses on behalf of Ndlambe Municipality.
Monitoring of River health with help and interaction with Rhodes University.
We shall continue to monitor property and other developments which have a potential impact on the estuaries and the environment.
