On the 24th February children from Kenton Primary School walked to Kwaaihoek to spend the morning exploring the rock pools, and learning about the value and importance of our rocky shores.
After finding and identifying various sea creatures in the rock pools Verona Veltman, also known as the Penguin Lady of Cannon Rocks, told the children about the terrible effects of plastic on sea birds and animals, particularly our own indigenous African Penguin, whose numbers have fallen drastically due to over fishing and man-made waste related issues. The children were fascinated and learned that amongst other things balloons can seem like baby octopuses and plastic bags like jellyfish – both of which are consumed by various marine creatures, often causing death.
This presentation was followed by a sand castle building competition, which truly was spectacular making it virtually impossible to choose a winning group: several mermaids, a car, a few small villages and other interesting and imaginative creations fanned across the beach changing its landscape until the high tide came in to claim these offerings.
