As this newsletter is being prepared (29 August 2018) Lewis Pugh a South African endurance swimmer has just completed his 530km swim from Land’s End in Cornwall to Dover in Kent to raise awareness about the health of the worlds oceans. During his journey he was shocked to note the lack of fish and birds.
He tweeted:
I’ve just touched Dover harbour wall. That’s the end. 530kms in 49 days. I’ve done my bit, now it’s time for Government to do theirs. #TheLongSwim pic.twitter.com/Nd97TnGHd7

Congratulations Lewis!
We are continually being warned about plastics polluting our estuaries and oceans and yet the scourge of plastic litter doesn’t seem to diminish. It keeps growing. Even though this video from BBC News is of plastic pollution in the Caribbean it might equally apply to the world’s oceans.
