The residents of our communities woke up to wide scale destruction and damage following storm surges and gale force winds over the weekend of the 15th September. Whilst there was not a lot of damage to property or flooding as with previous storms, a lot of damage was experienced along the coast front and the two estuaries of the Bushmans River and Kariega River.
Jetties were damaged, boats sunk or beached, and the various slipways suffered damage to infrastructure. The lower parking area at Middle Beach suffered much damage, especially the retaining walls.
The sad news was also the loss of the iconic Carriage Rock formation, which sadly lost its upper piece, destroying the well-known landmark. For so long a backdrop for family photos, a rite of passage for children to climb or run underneath, and a constant in an ever-changing natural environment.
Estuary Care is currently working with the local authorities and organisations to assess the damage, and hope to have an update on the repair plans soon.
