River Safety: Everything You Need to Know to Stay Safe and Enjoy Your Time on the Water
At Estuary Care, one of our key responsibilities is ensuring that our beautiful rivers remain safe and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, we encourage all river users to prioritize safety and behave responsibly on the water.
Here are the essentials to keep in mind:
Boating Requirements
- Skipper’s License: It’s required by law for anyone operating a boat with an engine of 15 horsepower or more to hold a valid skipper’s license.
- Boat Licensing: Your vessel must also be licensed. You can obtain this from the Ndlambe Municipality offices in Kenton-on-Sea or Port Alfred. Don’t forget to bring your boat’s Certificate of Fitness (C.O.F.) and registration number.
Navigation Rules
- When traveling upstream, always keep to the right-hand side of the river. The same rule applies when heading back downstream.
- Be mindful of sandbanks, as the river’s landscape is constantly shifting. Stay alert and navigate carefully to avoid accidents.
Respect for Other River Users
- Be cautious and courteous at all times. Respect others who are also enjoying the river, whether they’re boating, fishing, or simply relaxing.
Safety and Enforcement
- The Ndlambe River Police actively patrol the waterways, ensuring everyone adheres to safety regulations. They are vigilant about preventing irresponsible behavior and alcohol abuse, so please act responsibly.
- Emergency contact numbers can be found on our website. Keep them handy for peace of mind.
We invite you to embrace the relaxed and welcoming spirit of the Barefoot Capital while making safety your top priority. With responsible behavior and an awareness of the rules, you can enjoy our rivers to the fullest.
Happy boating!
