Did you know?
- Africa is the second-most polluted continent in the world and is rapidly becoming worse.
- Millions of animals (whales, dolphins, turtles, birds, seals) drawn from more than 260 different species, are killed each year by the plastic they’re entangled in or the plastic they mistook for food and ate.
- Plastic which enters the seas has an economic value worth between US$ 80 and 120 billion per annum.
- If this plastic were collected before being lost to the oceans it could re-enter the economy, create jobs, alleviate poverty and reduce the need to call upon oil to meet the growing demand for plastic.
A Proudly Kenton Initiative
The Sustainable Seas Trust chooses to live and work in Kenton-on-Sea where the beautiful Kariega and Bushmans estuaries are the heartbeat of this town.
Kenton can be proud of organisations such as Estuary Care and Sustainable Seas Trust who are devoted to preserving and protecting our estuaries and oceans and the magnificent animal and plant life within.
SST is passionate about raising educational awareness that is fun, meaningful and empowering in such a way to promote sustainable living. During 2017, the SST embarked on exciting educational programmes within Kenton schools and collaborated with surrounding organisations such as the Sibuya and Kariega Game Reserves.
The SST team visited a few schools in Kenton to help the learners understand the need for conservation on our sandy shores. The learners were taught about the magical life within the estuaries and what they can do to help protect it. Exciting activities and hands-on workshops were facilitated during the Holiday Club platforms. The learners displayed enormous levels of enthusiasm and promise for participating in our global movement to help preserve our coastal areas from over-harvesting and pollution.
Our local game reserves have been fantastic in helping us clean up the estuary and take educators and trainees up the river to gain experience of our mission. We are grateful for the support of organisations like the Kariega and Sibuya Game Reserves who share our passion and who help bring to life our mandate for Africa.
